Tony Sly (NO USE FOR A NAME)

No Use for a Name (sometimes abbreviated NUFAN) is a punk rock band from San Jose, California, United States formed in 1987 by Chris Dodge (guitar), Steve Papoutsis (bass), Rory Koff (drums), and Tony Sly (vocals). The band's sound has evolved considerably through its career, taking on a much lighter brand of melodic punk as the years passed. (from Wikipedia)

Slovenia is one of your traditional countries on your tour schedule.Tell me something about Your impressions from your gigs here.

I like playing in Slovenia. The crowds always have good energy. It seems the shows always have a pretty positive vibe to them.

NUFAN and LAGWAGON are two very connected bands. How all this relationship starts…and tell me something about your acoustic cooperation.

Well I think that press drums that up a little more because of the whole "first two bands signed to Fat thing" We came from San Jose, California or more specifically Sunnyvale, a population of 10,000 people. They were from Santa Barbara..a good 4 hour drive away so we didn't really come up together intentionally. However in the early days of Fat I think there was a team mentality with some of the early bands and we supported Lag wagon like I think they supported us. The acoustic thing happened really naturally and was really obvious. But it totally works well.

What is the main reason for so many good power and melodic bands from California? Practically all the names cames from California:NUFAN,BAD RELIGION,CIRCLE JERKS,BIG DRILL CAR,NOFX etc.etc.
Is the cooperation on whole californian music scene one the main reason?

I don't know the answer to that. I think maybe it was just contagious and there was some healthy competition there for most bands and labels, it made us have to try harder having all these great bands that cleared our way.

No Use For A Name - Biggest Lie

NUFAN is known/like LAGWAGON/ as one of the most "tourable" bands. You have had toured practically all over the globe. And still it seems that you hungry of stages. You are not a band to have 10 gigs a year?
Still passion on stage?

Yes. Some nights. Haha, no really I love music, i love playing music and people singing our songs loudly, it's such a great communal experience.

What do you prefer: van or bus for touring? I have a feeling that vans connected band together. Or not.

Bus. I cannot lie: I hate having a bad back, haha.

I know a lot of a "tour stories" of so many bands, tell me some really weird happenings from your Tour "treasure box".

The weird things need to stay off the record. I have tons of stories but nothing comes to mind right now. I have had funny run ins with people and I have done some pretty stupid shit myself. I was never built for this life style, haha.I love writing songs, but limelight has never been my favorite thing. In my parralel life I think I'm a home-body and a loner. I like reading and writing and songs. I'm a dork.

After all this years, how can you see your music works? NUFAN on thirty anniversary tour?

I hope so. Why not? I love doing it still.

I wish you a lot of great shows on your way. Seeya in Ajdovščina. Would you like to see some of our best wine cellars? Inside, not outside, of course?

Yes,of course. please bring me a bottle of red wine, thanks!

Thank You.
